im going 2 divorce u

So remember that episode of "Sex in the City" where Carrie gets broken up with via post-it note?

Yeah, I thought it was a bit far-fetched too, but apparently I was wrong...

A Saudi man divorced his wife through text message the other day. Harsh.  Apparently, Saudi Arabia practices a strict form of Islamic Sharia law where a man can divorce his wife by saying "I divorce you" three times. I mean, I get that it's legal, but have a little class, man!

A snowy pathway

An icy pathway

A pathway covered in soy sauce

A salted pathway

A SALTED PATHWAY!

So, why the hell can't Amherst College figure out that adding soy sauce to the snowy/icy paths on campus just makes shit dangerous AND disgusting.  I, for one, choose bodily injury...then at least I wouldn't have to deal with the floor of my room being sticky once the sauce dries on it...then at least the bottoms of my pants would stay the colors they are supposed to be...then our campus wouldn't smell like ass.  Or, NOVEL IDEA, salt the paths...because that's what actually works!

Which brings me to my next point...I HATE THE SNOW. Why does it always melt, then rain, then freeze, then melt "for good", then get warm for two days, then SNOW AGAIN?! Screw this.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role - Kate Winslet for The Reader

Our Pick - Happy to see Kate Winslet win one (Personally I think she got robbed in 2005 when she didn't win for Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind) although we were not that impressed with her performace in The Reader.  We have gone with Anne Hathaway for her performance in Rachel Getting Married.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role - Heath Ledger for The Dark Knight

Our Pick - As good as Robert Downey Jr., Josh Brolin, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman are in just about everything, Heath Ledger is clearly the winner here.  He took an iconic character, made it his own and created a performance that we couldn't look away from.  He did an amazing job

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role - Penélope Cruz for Vicky Cristina Barcelona

Our Pick - Penelope Cruz was great as the firey psychotic artist and we at the Jolt would have made the same pick.  Although we feel that Marisa Tomei was excellent in The Wrestler and we wouldn't have been upset if she had won instead.

For the fall HBO line-up, a brand new series was aired (from Australia) called "Summer Heights High".  If you like the mockumentary style filming of "The Office" then this show will probably appeal to you.  I've noticed in the past 2 weeks or so that it's starting to get a cult following on campus actually...so you better not miss out on it...

It is a satirical parody of high school life focusing on three ridiculous characters.  It  follows these characters through the school days while they torment everyone else with their antics. Here is a youtube link to a clip:

Getting bored with the run-of-the-mill drinks offered in the States these days? Have no fear…bovine urine is here.

Way out yonder in the Middle East somewhere, an historically assertive Hindu organization (one which is known for its resistance to importing foods from the West) plans to market a new beverage made from cow's urine. I guess the logic behind it is that cow urine is seen as sacred in Hindu parts of India? Who knows…
Anyway, the cow pee is being tested over the next couple of weeks to make sure the product is plausible. Also…extra cool…the pee might be mixed with some nutritious goodies like aloe vera and gooseberry to boost the immune system. And don’t worry…"Cow urine offers a cure for around 70 to 80 incurable diseases like diabetes. All are curable by cow urine"…at least that’s what Om Prakash, the head of the RSS Cow Protection Department says. Sign me up for mail-order, please.
I think they should buy out Mellow Yellow’s trademark…wait, I haven’t seen that soda in years, does it even exist anymore? Also, have any of you readers out there tried to drink pee? Does it taste like anything? I'm not curious enough to find out myself, but I am willing to listen to any and all stories people migth have.

For treehuggers (and those who get expensive shit stolen from them)

posted feb 11 2009, 11:46am by

This may be old news for both groups of people this title addresses, but I figured, what the hell, it's pretty cool.

So, everyone knows how great cycling is for the environment, but it poses a pretty significant problem at the outset.  The cost of buying a bike (even a crappy Wal-Mart bike) can be pretty steep...and as college students, maybe we don't have that kind of money to try something new out.  Well, here is a possible solution: a cardboard bicycle that costs approximately $30 to produce (I'm no econ major, so I don't know what that would translate to for selling/market value).  It seems like a pretty easy way to see if you like biking or not (if you don't mind the possibility of getting the shit kicked out of you for being a tremendously unique individual).

Also, I have had 2 bikes stolen on campus (no, I don't lock my bike because I'm lazy as shit, and both of them were bikes that people gave to me because they were otherwise going to be trashed)...if I had bought those bikes myself (let's say $115 a pop...I would probably be quite upset). I'm just going to buy this thing so no one will steal it form me. It's ugly, and it probably melts in the rain (the inventor ensured CNN that this wasn't the case, but I don't know if I buy it), so I think I'm safe from the rampant theft on campus.

Also, it's cardboard, so  it's recyclable...yay for saving the earth. Oh yeah, and it actually supports up to 168 pounds. Not too bad.

How to...with Google

posted feb 11 2009, 10:30am by

Q: If you would like to experiment with a different hair color but don't want to make a long-term commitment or use harsh chemicals, what do you do?

A: Duh, you do a little test-run with Kool Aid.
No matter how busy I am on any given day, the "How to" section on Google always manages to distract me. Today I learned how to dye my hair with Kool Aid. There was even a youtube video documenting the whole experience. And just so you know...this is how it's done...step by step:

1. Apply some petroleum jelly to your skin all around your head. This will make the colour wash off more easily when you're done. Use a lot on your ears!
2. Add the Koolaid to a small bowl. Use unsweetened, to avoid sticky hair. Don't use the artificially sweetened kind either, as the chemicals could bother your eyes. In this example, three packages of Tropical Punch are used for a reddish tint. You may need to use more packages, depending on the length of your hair. (Blue is best made by combining blue raspberry flavor with a little grape.)
3. Add just a few drops of water to the Koolaid. You want a paste, not a liquid.
4. Add a few drops of hair conditioner to make the colour from the Koolaid permeate the hair a little more evenly. It also helps make a paste.
5. Mix the three packages of Koolaid, the water, and the conditioner, until you get a smooth paste. All the lumps have to be completely gone.
6. Work the paste into the hair. This is the fun part. You need help for this. Try to massage it into the hair, and not the scalp. (If you're doing tips or highlights, use a highlighting wand and wrap the dyed sections in tin foil.)
7. Wrap the hair in several long strips of sandwich wrap. You'll have to sleep in it, so do a good job!
8. Secure it carefully with tape. This isn't just to protect the furniture, or to keep the dog from licking your head. It's to keep the moisture in, and the dye acting longer.
9. After a good night's sleep, remove the plastic wrap. Don't be dismayed by the gruesome colours on your skin ... everything washes off!
10. Thoroughly wash your hair, apply conditioner, and wash again. Then comb it out and wait for it to dry. The final tint will be less obvious with dry hair.
Granted, this is only a solution to permanent dye phobias if you happen to want your hair to be bright red, or any other highly unnatural color that Kool Aid powder comes in. Awesome. But there is a redeeming side-effect! Your hair will smell like the flavor you used! Which is also excellent because I hear that shampoos and conditioners don’t smell like anything anymore.

ESPN's Rick Reilly at the World Series of Beer Pong

posted jan 14 2009, 4:39pm by

Rick Reilly has a great piece up at ESPN.com about this years World Series of Beer Pong.

There is only one place I know that combines tiny balls, plastic cups and vats of beer. Besides Jose Canseco's house, that is.

It's a beer pong tournament. This is a sport that requires a steady hand, faulty hearing and a titanium liver. It's believed that 73% of all tuition money goes toward it.

Beer pong is played on a table slightly smaller than Ping-Pong's, by teams of two. Ten cups, filled about one-third with beer, are set like bowling pins at the ends. As you try to toss or bounce a Ping-Pong ball into the cups on the side opposite yours, opponents jump and yell unspeakables about your mother. If you make it, they must drink it. First team to sink all 10 cups wins. It's very sophisticated.

Drink Lots of Coffee or Red Bull? You Might Start Hallucinating

posted jan 14 2009, 1:23pm by

Those most at risk have at least seven cups a day or a similar quantity of Red Bull.

There was also more chance of them hearing voices, a Durham University team found.

The findings might be explained by caffeine worsening the effects of stress.

So is it time to rethink that 8th cup of coffee, or are you ready to hang out with some over-caffinated ghosts.
